We started out Tuesday morning from Rotorua to get to Wellington, the southern most part of the north island. Our ferry ride from the north island to the south island is scheduled for Thursday, March 3rd.
The weather wasn't very good with poor visibility but Reg kept me informed on what I was missing on the way down. We shared the driving and I had no problems. We stopped in Waiouru to have lunch with Reg's daughter Cheryl. She lives and works near Waiouru where her husband Craig does contract work for the New Zealand military.
We arrived in Wellington around 5. It is a beautiful port city. I had used some points I had with Choice Hotels to book us a room in Wellington. The Comfort Inn was right downtown on Cuba street and was located in an area with a lot of boutique shops and restaurants. We went for a walk down Cuba street until we saw the wharf area.

Trade Aid is an interesting concept started by a philanthropic New Zealand couple.
There are several "Trade Aid" stores located across the country (this one in Picton)
that sell items produced by people in third world countries.

We stayed in the Clearview Motel in Kaikoura with Terry and Bon Thompson as our hosts. Our room was right across the road from the ocean and the view was fantastic. We had a great dinner at the Blue Water restaurant right down the street from our motel.
